A couple of months ago I read an interesting book on South Park
, called "South Park and Philosophy"
(edited by Robert Arp), which is a collection of essays looking closely at themes and tropes in SP and how they relate to ancient and modern philosophy. One of the things that always irks me is when someone dismisses the show based solely on principle, because someone else has told them it's all about fart jokes and blasphemy. I love how Matt Stone and Trey Parker make a clever social commentary that's often hilarious and shocking because
the world is a hilarious and shocking place, and they don't discriminate - everything is fair game. How many of us have the guts to let loose to that degree in our own writing? I can only respect them for that.
Anyway, the book is a fascinating read if you like SP, or if you dislike the show but haven't watched much of it. And this leads me smoothly on to more South Park
( And they all lived happily ever after (except for Kyle who died from AIDS two weeks later) )
